The Team-Taught courses feature is designed for institutions that have courses with multiple instructors or teaching assistants for a single course, and evaluations for each individual should be gathered. This feature allows each instructor or teaching assistant to be evaluated separately within the same course, ensuring their individual contributions and performance are accurately assessed.
To utilize this feature, it must be enabled in both your survey and project. This article outlines how to enable this feature in both. For a video overview, refer to the video below, and continue reading for more detailed written steps.
Getting Started
To begin utilizing the team-taught feature, it must be enabled in both your survey and project separately. The steps for enabling it in each are outlined in the corresponding sections below. It is recommended to first enable the team-taught feature in your survey before deploying your project. Being that once your survey is part of an in-progress or ended project, the team-taught feature cannot be enabled.
Note: The Team-Taught courses feature can only be enabled for Course Evaluation type projects and will not impact courses with a single Instructor or Teaching Assistant. For more information on Course Evaluation type projects, see How to Create a Course Evaluation Project. |
Enabling Team-Taught Questions in a Survey
When constructing your survey, there will be specific questions where you'll want to gather individualized feedback for multiple instructors or teaching assistants within a single course. These questions typically focus on evaluating the performance of instructors or teaching assistants. To enable the collection of individualized assessments for these questions, you must activate the team-taught feature for each question by designating them as either "Enable as Instructor Question" or "Enable as Teaching Assistant Question" before your survey is part of an in-progress or ended project.
Once the team-taught feature is activated based on your project's settings, the designated questions will repeat for each instructor or teaching assistant in the course when students/respondents take the survey. Alternatively, you can configure it to allow instructors or teaching assistants from a list to evaluate. You can access and enable these options for each question when editing a survey question within the "Enable this Question as" section of the "Question Properties" table, as shown in the image below.
If a question is not enabled for the team-taught feature, it will default to "Non-Instructor/Non-TA question" in the "Enable this question as" section of the "Question Properties" table. This means that the question will only appear once to the student in the survey, regardless of the number of instructors or teaching assistants enrolled in the course, as the team-taught feature was not activated for that question to gather individualized feedback for multiple instructors or teaching assistants within a single course.
Note: The Team-Taught courses feature cannot be enabled for Multiple Selection type questions neither for General Survey nor Metadata type surveys. |
Enabling Team-Taught Questions in a Project for Instructors
Within your project, you can enable the team-taught feature to manage how individualized assessments are collected for multiple instructors or teaching assistants enrolled in a single course. To begin, expand the "Instructor Questions in Team-Taught Courses" section within your project's Properties tab. This section will have two options to choose from, as shown in the following image and more details about these options are outlined below.

Instructor Questions in team-taught courses are automatically presented for ALL instructors in the course: This is the default option and is suitable for courses with multiple instructors where students have interacted with all instructors enrolled in the course and need to assess each instructor. When this option is selected, questions enabled as Instructor Questions in your survey will repeat for each instructor in the course and display each of the instructors' name in the repeated question to ensure accurate evaluation data collection.
Note: If the Instructor Name placeholder is used in the question text of your survey, it will be replaced with the instructors' names in the repeated questions, once for each instructor.

A list of instructors in team-taught courses is presented to the student, and Instructor Questions are only displayed on the survey for instructors selected by the student: This option is useful for courses with multiple instructors where students only interacted with a few instructors and need to evaluate only those instructors. When this option is selected, students will first be presented with a list of instructors enrolled in the course when they access the survey as shown in the image below.
They will then select the instructors they worked with in that course. After the selection, the question will repeat for each instructor chosen by the student for questions enabled as Instructor Questions in the survey. The selected instructors name will be visible in the repeated questions. To revise the list of selected instructors, the student/respondent will need to navigate back to the start of the survey by utilizing the "Previous" button to update their selections. However, this action may lead to data loss, requiring them to re-enter their evaluation.
Note: Customization of the text at the top of the list of instructors is possible by utilizing the "Customize the text that displays on the top of the list" field within the "Instructor Questions in Team-Taught Courses" section. If a customized text is not added, "Select Instructor(s)" will display by default. Additionally, if the Instructor Name placeholder is used in the question text of your survey, it will be replaced with the instructors' names in the repeated questions, once for each instructor selected.
Enabling Team-Taught Questions in a Project for Teaching Assistants
In your project, the team-taught feature allows you to gather individualized assessments for multiple teaching assistants (TA) in a single course. This feature can be enabled by expanding the "TA Questions in Team-Taught Courses" section within your project's Properties tab. This section will have two options to choose from, as shown in the following image and more details about these options are outlined below.

When this option is selected, students will first be presented with a list of TAs enrolled in the course when they access the survey.
They will then select the TAs they worked with in that course. After the selection, the question will repeat for each TA chosen by the student for questions enabled as Teaching Assistant Questions in the survey. The selected TAs name will be visible in the repeated questions. To revise the list of selected TAs, the student/respondent will need to navigate back to the start of the survey by utilizing the "Previous" button to update their selections. However, this action may delete their previous responses, requiring them to re-enter their evaluation.

Instructor and Teaching Assistant Team-Taught Questions in Results:
Access to results for team-taught questions are restricted on an instructor by instructor basis. This means that instructors will only have access to their own results for team-taught question responses. However, they can still view responses for other questions that were not enabled as team-taught question. The functionality of how instructors can view their results is as follows:
- If both Instructor #1 and Instructor #2 are enrolled in a course with Instructor Questions, Instructor #1 can only view his/her results for the team taught questions and will not have access to Instructor #2's results for those questions, and vice-versa.
- Both Instructor #1 and Instructor #2 would be able to view the results those questions NOT enabled as Instructor Questions.
Reports generated for teaching assistants are included in the Project Results and Instructor Results areas. In Project Results, there will be multiple sections for each teaching assistant, with their name displayed in the Course Title. Administrators can view reports for each instructor individually or collectively in one report.
