Action Required: D2L Integration Requires Reconnection After August 18, 2026 Update

Watermark is updating the Planning & Self-Study D2L integration on August 18, 2026, to align with D2L’s new API security scopes. Existing D2L integrations will automatically disconnect. Data syncing will pause until the integration is reconnected by the institution.

What's changing

D2L has updated the API scope requirement options for several endpoints that Watermark's Planning & Self-Study integration uses to retrieve rubric and assignment data from institutional D2L environments. To align with these new requirement options, we are updating our integration on August 18, 2026.

When this update is released, connected D2L integrations will automatically move to a disconnected state.

The institution's LMS Administrators will need to reconnect the integration to restore data syncing.

Why this is happening

D2L now offers specific, named permission scopes for APIs that were previously accessible through a general authentication scope. This is a security and governance improvement on D2L's end, and our integration will be updated to request the modified scopes going forward.

What you need to do

After August 18, a user with administrator access in both Watermark and D2L will need to reconnect the D2L integration in Planning & Self-Study. During the reconnection process, they will be prompted to authorize the updated set of permissions.

For steps on reconnecting the integration, please see the resource attached at the bottom of this page.

What happens if you don't reconnect

Until the integration is reconnected, Planning & Self-Study will not be able to pull rubric or assignment data from D2L. No data will be lost — reconnecting will restore normal sync behavior.

What data is affected

The updated scopes cover the following data types:

  • Discussion rubrics — rubric definitions attached to D2L discussion topics
  • Discussion rubric assessments — student rubric scores for discussion topics
  • Assignment folders — assignment data including associated rubrics
  • Assignment submissions — student submission and assessment data for assignments
