(Please Note: The directions required for reconnecting integration have been updated as of August 14th. A previous notification stated that the integration would be automatically disconnected. We are providing this update to inform you the integration will remain connected, but will still require updates to the permission scopes)
Watermark is updating the Planning & Self-Study D2L integration on August 20, 2026, to align with D2L’s new API security scopes.
What's changing
D2L has updated the API scope requirement options for several endpoints that Watermark's Planning & Self-Study integration uses to retrieve rubric and assignment data from institutional D2L environments. To align with these new requirement options, we are updating our integration on August 20, 2026.
When this update is released, the D2L integration will need to be disconnected and reconnected with its permission scopes updated.
Why this is happening
D2L now offers specific, named permission scopes for APIs that were previously accessible through a general authentication scope. This is a security and governance improvement on D2L's end, and our integration will be updated to request the modified scopes going forward.
What you need to do
After August 20th, a user with administrator access in both Planning & Self Study and D2L will need to disconnect and subsequently reconnect the D2L integration with updated scope permissions. During the update process, they will be prompted to authorize the updated set of permissions.
For steps on updating the integration, please see the resource attached below.
What data is affected
The updated scopes cover the following data types:
- Discussion rubrics — rubric definitions attached to D2L discussion topics
- Discussion rubric assessments — student rubric scores for discussion topics
- Assignment folders — assignment data including associated rubrics
- Assignment submissions — student submission and assessment data for assignments
