ABET Appendix B Faculty Vitae

The ABET Appendix B Faculty Vita report is part of the Faculty Success ABET reporting suite, designed to help institutions prepare faculty curriculum vitae for submission with their ABET Self-Study Questionnaire. Unlike the Table 6-1 and 6-2 reports, which pull data automatically based on the report date range, the Appendix B report is driven by selections made on the dedicated ABET Vitae screen in each faculty member's profile. This article explains how the ABET Vitae screen works, who manages it, and how each section maps to existing Faculty Success activity data.

This article is intended for Faculty Success Administrators, Deans, and Department Heads responsible for preparing ABET accreditation materials.

About ABET Appendix B

ABET's Self-Study Questionnaire requires a curriculum vitae for each faculty member included in the program, submitted as Appendix B. ABET specifies that each vita be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font and be no longer than three pages in length. The Self-Study Questionnaire identifies the following content areas for each vita:

  • Education
  • Academic and professional experience
  • Certifications or professional registrations
  • Current membership in professional organizations
  • Honors and awards
  • Service activities (within and outside of the institution)
  • Most important publications and presentations from the past five years
  • Faculty development activities attended

Faculty Success maps each of these content areas to a corresponding section on the ABET Vitae screen, as described in the sections below. Always refer to the ABET Self-Study Questionnaire templates published on the ABET website to confirm current Appendix B requirements for your commission and review cycle before submitting your Self-Study Report.

The ABET Vitae Screen

The ABET Vitae screen is a companion screen for the ABET reporting suite. Each faculty member has a single ABET Vitae record, and administrators use the ABET Vitae screen to select existing activity records from the faculty member's profile for inclusion in the vita report. Each section of the screen presents a dropdown list of records already entered in the relevant activity screen, allowing administrators to choose which items to include.

Because each section uses record reference fields linked to existing activity data, no new information is entered on the ABET Vitae screen itself. If a record is missing from a dropdown, it means the corresponding activity has not yet been entered in the faculty member's profile in the relevant screen.

Selections on the ABET Vitae screen persist until changed. Administrators should review and update each faculty member's ABET Vitae screen when preparing for an accreditation visit.

Who Manages the ABET Vitae Screen

By default, the ABET Vitae screen is read-only for faculty. It is managed by users who have Manage Data: Read/Write permissions in their Security Role. University Administrators and College Limited Administrators have this access by default. Institutions can also create an additional college-scoped Security Role to give other users, such as staff supporting accreditation preparation, the ability to manage faculty profiles on behalf of the college. For more information on Security Roles and permissions, see Security Roles Overview.

If your institution would like faculty to manage their own ABET Vitae screen, the field permissions can be changed from read-only to editable for faculty by submitting a Work Request.

Report Date Range

Because the ABET Vitae screen contains a single record per faculty member and is not date-range dependent, the selections made on the screen will appear in the report regardless of the date range used when running it. We recommend using the same date range applied when running the Table 6-1 and Table 6-2 reports to keep your ABET reporting consistent.

The report date range does, however, affect which publications and presentations are eligible to appear in the output. This is described in the Publications and Presentations section below.

ABET Vitae Screen Sections

The following sections describe each part of the ABET Vitae screen, the Faculty Success activity screen it draws from, and any filtering criteria applied when the report is generated.

Education

Select all positions relevant to the faculty member's ABET vita.

  • Screens: University Service, Professional Service, Public Service
  • Records included: All records selected on the ABET Vitae screen.

The dropdown displays records from all service screens in the faculty member's profile. The report displays the position or role, organization, and dates for each selected record.

Publications and Presentations

  • Screens: Publications/Intellectual Contributions, Presentations
  • Records included: Selected records with a publication or presentation date falling within five years of the report end date.

ABET's Self-Study Questionnaire requires that this section include only the most important publications and presentations from the past five years, including the title, co-authors if any, where published or presented, and the date of publication or presentation. To align with this requirement, Faculty Success applies a date filter when the report is generated: only selected records with a publication or presentation date within five years of the report end date will appear in the output. Records selected on the ABET Vitae screen that fall outside this window will not print in the report, even if they were selected.

The report end date you enter when running the report determines which records are within the five-year window. We recommend using a date range consistent with the academic year of your Self-Study Report, as used for running Tables 6-1 and 6-2, to ensure the five-year window is correctly aligned with your accreditation cycle.

Important: If a selected publication or presentation does not appear in the report output, confirm that its recorded date falls within five years of the report end date you entered. Verify that the publication or presentation date is accurately recorded in the faculty member's profile before re-running the report.

Faculty Development Activities Attended

  • Screen: Professional Development
  • Records included: All records selected on the ABET Vitae screen.

The dropdown displays all professional development records in the faculty member's profile. The report displays the activity type, title, sponsoring organization, and dates for each selected record.

Page Length

ABET's Self-Study Questionnaire specifies that each faculty vita in Appendix B should be no longer than three pages in Times New Roman 12-point font. The Faculty Success report is pre-configured to match this formatting. However, the number of records selected on the ABET Vitae screen directly determines the length of each vita. Review the generated report for each faculty member to confirm their vita falls within the three-page limit before submitting your Self-Study Report.

If a vita exceeds three pages, return to the faculty member's ABET Vitae screen and remove lower-priority selections until the vita is within the required length.

Preparing Your Data

Before completing the ABET Vitae screen for each faculty member, confirm that the relevant activity records have been entered in Faculty Success. Records must exist in a faculty member's profile before they can be selected on the ABET Vitae screen.

  • Degree records exist in Degrees for each faculty member's relevant educational credentials.
  • Position records exist in Professional Positions for relevant academic and non-academic experience.
  • Licensure and certification records exist in Licensures and Certifications.
  • Professional organization memberships are entered in Professional Organizations.
  • Relevant honors and awards are entered in Awards and Honors.
  • Service activities are entered in University Service, Professional Service, and/or Public Service as appropriate.
  • Publications and presentations from the past five years are entered in Publications/Intellectual Contributions and/or Presentations, with accurate publication or presentation dates.
  • Professional development activities are entered in Professional Development.

Once activity data is confirmed, administrators with Manage Data: Read/Write access can open each faculty member's ABET Vitae screen and make the appropriate selections for each section. After selections are saved, run the ABET Appendix B Faculty Vita report and review the output for each faculty member to confirm accuracy and page length before submitting your Self-Study Report.
