The Custom Questions feature in Course Evaluations & Surveys (CES) allows node administrators and instructors to add personalized questions to courses within their purview for a course evaluation type project. This article provides an overview of utilizing the feature and detailed instructions on how to enable the feature can be found Custom Questions for CES Administrators. A video overview is available below.
Note: We have updated the user interface since the creation of the video. However, the information in the video remains relevant, and this article provides more information about utilizing the custom questions feature.
Accessing Custom Questions
To access the custom questions feature, follow these steps:
- Login to Course Evaluations & Surveys (CES).
- Navigate to custom questions by one of the following methods:
- Navigation Bar: Go to Custom Questions Surveys in the top navigation bar.
- Widget: If the custom questions feature widget has been added to your CES Dashboard by your CES Administrator, you can click on the title of a project displayed within the widget. If the widget has not been added, use the navigation bar method instead.
Upon accessing the custom questions feature from the navigation bar, you can search for a particular project. Once you have found the project, you can select it and be taken to it's Main Custom Questions page where three options can be selected to proceed with. These options are described further in the following section of this article labeled, "Adding Custom Questions and Previewing the Main Survey."
Adding Custom Questions and Previewing the Main Survey
Once on a project's Main Custom Questions page, you can select from the following options depending on the action needed to be taken:
Add Custom Question Survey
This option allows you to align a custom question survey you have created to specific courses within your project by following theses steps:
- On the Main Custom Questions page, click Add Custom Question Survey. Surveys you have created will be listed in the "Surveys" box. Select a survey by clicking the checkmark icon in the "Select" column and then click the Selected Courses button.

Afterwards, you can align the selected survey to desired courses. This
process
differs between instructors and node administrators as outlined below:
- Instructor: Click the Add Courses button to open a pop-up window that lists the courses you are enrolled in as an instructor within the project. Utilize the fields within the "Search Courses" box to find courses by their course code, title, or unique ID. Select the courses you wish to align the selected survey to by checking the box by the course and clicking the Add Selected Courses button.

Node Administrator: You will be taken to a page allowing you to select courses aligned to a specific hierarchy level or select desired courses within your purview. After selecting the desired courses or hierarchy level, click the Finish: Save Custom Question Survey button.
Note: Hierarchy levels that node administrators have access to is managed by the CES Administrator through Manage Administrators.
- After adding the desired courses, a confirmation window will appear, and you will returned to the Main Custom Questions page. This custom question survey will then be visible from this page and you can click on the number within the "Courses" column to see the courses aligned to the survey.
Create New Survey
This option allows instructors and node administrators to create a new survey by following these steps:
- On the Main Custom Questions page, click Create New Survey. Enter a title for the new survey and the description is optional. Click Save New button to begin adding questions. Refer to this article for more information on question types that can be added.
- After adding your questions to the survey you are creating, click Save to save your progress. This button can also be selected when you need to return to the survey at a later time, if needed.
- Once the survey is saved, click Cancel to exit out of the survey. You will then be returned to the Main Custom Questions page and you will need to attach the survey to courses within the project by following the steps outlined in the "Add Custom Question Survey" section of this article.
View Main Survey for this Project
This option allows you to preview the main survey for the project by simply clicking on View Main Survey for this Project from the Main Custom Questions page. A pop-up window will then appear displaying the main survey, allowing you to see the survey process for the project. This option can be used to preview the main survey to ensure that is aligns with your evaluation goals and contains all necessary questions.
The custom questions feature in CES provides flexibility and personalization for course evaluation projects. By following the steps outlined above, instructors and node administrators can effectively add and manage custom questions for courses within their purview.
