The Web of Science platform is part of Clarivate's Scientific and Academic Research products and services, and it contains over a billion cited references, including books, journal articles, patents, websites, conference proceedings, and Open Access materials dating back to 1900. Web of Science is a painstakingly selected, actively curated database of the journals that researchers themselves have judged to be the most important and useful in their fields. All of this is to say that integrating your Faculty Success instance with Web of Science will benefit your users by allowing them to browse and import work from this platform.

The Basics

Watermark offers an in-built solution for integrating your Faculty Success instance with Web of Science, allowing your users to quickly retrieve publication data found in the Web of Science Core Collection, which only houses items after they've been published in print, in order to import it into their Publications (also known as the Intellectual Contribution) activity screen via the Third Party Import tool.

Once Web of Science is integrated, your users will see it as an option on the activity screen's third party import tool and will be able to search for publication data to import by ResearcherID. This is a highly recommended method of searching because it is an ID that is unique to a specific person and will result in far more accurate searches. For more information on Web of Science Research Profiles, visit Web of Science Core Collection.

Enabling Web of Science for your Institution

Configuring the integration is easy as it does not require any developer resources, and the steps to get started are outlined below.

  1. Register for an API Key on the Clarivate Developer Portal and keep the following items in mind:

    1. When completing the form in the Clarivate Developer Portal, fill out the first 3 fields for your own internal use and documentation in the following format:

      Application ID: "youruniversity"

      Application Name: "Your University"

Application Description: "Application for Web of Science API for integration with Watermark Faculty Success"

Note: You must include "Watermark Faculty Success" to expedite response to your sign-up application.

    2. When choosing the Client Type, please choose the option "Public: Single Page Application" and do not select the checkbox for OAuth2.0.
    3. Select the Web of Science Starter API, unless your institution is already set up to use the Web of Science Expanded Rest API, which we also accept to set up the integration.
  2. After your application is approved, you will be given an API Key. This unique key must be shared by your institution's top-level Faculty Success Administrator via a General Work Request. After receiving the work request, our technical team will install the API Key to your Faculty Success instance to complete the integration and the Web of Science option will then be available in the Third Party Import tool.
