Moodle 3.x/4.x User Integration

The Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block for Moodle offers a turnkey connection between your Moodle and Course Evaluations & Surveys account, allowing users to pass seamlessly from Moodle into their user account within Course Evaluations & Surveys. Along with the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block is functionality to automatically display a survey notification to students within Moodle if they have an active survey to complete, and take the student directly to their survey.







Automated and Dynamic LTI Links for Student, Instructor, and Administrator Users

The Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block will automatically be added for all courses within an Course Evaluations & Surveys project. The links that display inside the block will be based on the user’s role within Course Evaluations & Surveys (Administrator, Instructor, or Student). CES Administrators log into Course Evaluations & Surveys directly.


Students

  1. The User Access Block will automatically display to students/respondents in Moodle beginning on the survey start date scheduled in Course Evaluations & Surveys (through your project or course-level dates) with a link to the course evaluation.
  2. The User Access Block will be removed when the survey has been completed or ended for the course.

Instructors

  1. The User Access Block will automatically display to Instructors with a link to the Course Evaluations & Surveys dashboard when they are enrolled in a course in Course Evaluations & Surveys and the course is in a deployed Project.
  2. The link will remain as long as their account with the same username exists in Course Evaluations & Surveys.

Administrators

  1. The User Access Block will automatically display for Administrators when a course is in a deployed project and aligned with the Administrator's level of access in Course Evaluations & Surveys.
  2. The link will remain as long as their account with the same username exists in Course Evaluations & Surveys.

INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION OF THE Course Evaluations & Surveys USER ACCESS BLOCK FOR MOODLE

  1. To install the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block for Moodle follow these steps:
    1. Unzip the ZIP file sent to you from Course Evaluations & Surveys Support, it contains a folder called evaluation_kit_sso.
    2. Place evaluation_kit_sso folder in the BLOCKS folder under Moodle (DRIVE:\moodle\blocks).
    3. Navigate to the following area within Moodle:
      1. Home > Site administration > Plugins > Plugins overview > Blocks > Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access

      2. Open the zip file you received from Course Evaluations & Surveys and open the EvaluationKITKeys.txt document. This will contain the information needed to populate the fields in the above screenshot.
      3. Populate the appropriate fields with the information contained in the EvaluationKITKeys.txt file and click Save Changes.
  2. Placement of the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block within your Moodle Instance
    1. In Moodle, navigate to your Default Home Page for users. Typically this is your Moodle Dashboard.
    2. Enable Block Editing On for your default home page, or select Customize this page.
    3. From Add a Block, select Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block.
    4. This adds the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block to your default home page for all users. Placement of this block determines where users will see Course Evaluations & Surveys integration functionality, including the survey notifications. It is recommended this block reside on the Default Home Page for users of your Moodle instance.
    5. Click on the Settings/Action icon in the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block to access additional settings.

    6. From these settings in Moodle you can also add the Block to all pages throughout your Moodle site by selecting Display throughout the entire site from the Page contexts dropdown option. When the block is displayed throughout the entire site users will see the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block, as well as receive the survey notification for active surveys, when navigating to each page in Moodle.

  3. Log into Course Evaluations & Surveys to configure/manage the behavior of the Moodle User Integration
    1. Navigate to the following area within Course Evaluations & Surveys:
      1. Account > Integration Settings > Moodle Integration.
      2. Make sure version 2.7 or above is selected under Data Integration tab, Moodle Site Version, this controls the display of the User Integration tab.
      3. Click on the User Integration tab.

    2. Student Setup

      Configure The Survey Notification within Moodle: This feature allows you to enable a Survey Notification that automatically displays to students within Moodle for only those students with an active survey to take (otherwise Survey Notifications aren’t displayed). Additionally, the Survey Notification includes a Go To Survey button to take the student directly to their surveys. The Survey Notification will only display in Moodle where the Course Evaluations & Surveys User Access Block has been added.
      1. Display Checkbox: Display Survey Notification in Moodle enables/disables the automated Survey Notification from displaying to students in Moodle.
      2. Header Text: Customize the header text of the survey notification.
      3. Body Text: Customize the Notification body text, with plain text, or you can insert HTML.
      4. Go to Survey button text: Customize the button text for the Go To Survey button.
      5. Do it Later button: Show/hide the do it later button. Hiding the button will force the student to complete ALL active surveys they have to complete before being able to interact with their Moodle page. In other words, this option will lock the student out of other functions in Moodle until they complete all of their surveys.
      6. Remove Do it Later button: Automate hiding the do it later button X days before the survey ends.

      7. Display Course List in Module: This feature allows you to automatically display to students the list of their courses where they have an active survey to complete. The list of courses displays within the Course Evaluations & Surveys Course Evaluations module within Moodle. When enabled, the course name in the module is clickable and will take the student directly to their surveys. If the student doesn’t have any active surveys this module will be automatically hidden.
      8. Go Directly to Survey: This option takes the student directly to the survey for their course (provided the course information is aligned with Course Evaluations & Surveys). If unchecked, the student will go to their Student Dashboard in Course Evaluations & Surveys. This option is also used for the Survey Notification Go To Survey button.
    3. Administrator Setup
      1. This feature allows you to include a link within the Course Evaluations & Surveys Course Evaluations block within Moodle that will take the user who is also an Administrator role in Course Evaluations & Surveysdirectly to their Course Evaluations & Surveys Dashboard.
      2. Click the checkbox to enable/disable the display of a link in the block for Administrators.
      3. Customize the link text.
    4. Instructor Setup
      1. This feature allows you to include a link within the Course Evaluations & Surveys Course Evaluations block within Moodle that will take the user who is also an Instructor role in Course Evaluations & Surveys directly to their Course Evaluations & Surveys Dashboard.
      2. Click the checkbox to enable/disable the display of a link in the block for Instructors.
      3. Customize the link text.
