Understanding Audit Logs

This article will document some of the Frequently Asked Questions we receive about the output of Audit Log reports. For an overview of Audit Logs please see Usage Statistics

User Creations in the Audit Report

An example of audit log data in Excel

Creating a new user will always result in two rows appearing in the audit report, both with a Source of "IMPORT". This is because creating a new user results in the Name and Email fields being automatically populated on Personal and Contract Information as well as a Yearly Data record being created for the current academic year.

You can tell who created the user and how by looking at column G:

  • If the User is a username of someone at your institution the user was created manually.
  • If the User is Faculty Success the user was created through a Work Request, by Faculty Success.
  • If the User is the username of your Web Services account the account was created using either the User or UserBatch resource via Web Services.

Linked Records

Unfortunately, only a user's own records will appear in one's audit log.
