Background

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an agency of the United States government that supports research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. 

As of April 2017, NSF announced new requirements for submission of Collaborators and Other Affiliations (COA) information. COA information is now required in a specific Excel format, available on the NSF Website.

Faculty Success offers an NSF Collaborators report matching this format to ensure that faculty applying for NSF funding can provide the information required to surface existing working relationships and potential conflicts of interest before a review committee is selected to evaluate the application. This is in addition to the NSF Biographical Sketch report also offered by Faculty Success. 

Report Details

The report includes the following information, broken out into 5 tables:

• Table A
  • Name and organizational affiliation (including considered affiliation) in the last 12 months
• Table B:
  • Names and organizational affiliations for the following:
    • PhD Advisors
    • PhD Thesis Advises
    • Graduate Advisors
• Table C:
  • Names and organizational affiliations for the following: 
    • Co-authors on any book, article, report, abstract or paper with collaboration in the last 48 months
    • Collaborators on projects such as funded grants, graduate research or others in last 48 months
• Table D:
  • A list of any editorial board, editor-in-chief and co-editors interacted with in the last 24 months
• Table E:
  • A list of persons for whom a personal, family, or business relationship would otherwise preclude service as a reviewer

Tables A -D are populated with data stored in Faculty Success. The file attached to this article provides more detail on the logic used in these sections.

A heading for Table E will print in the report, but it will not be populated with data from the system, as this type of information is not typically stored in Faculty Success. Faculty can fill in this section after they run and download the report.

Other Considerations

NSF requires the Collaborators report in spreadsheet format. Therefore, the default file format is Excel. Excel reports are not available from the "Rapid Reports" utility, so faculty will have to run this report from the main Reports page.
