Canvas - Best Practices when Creating Measures for Alignment

It is strongly recommended that all institutions create NEW measures for aligning Canvas results, rather than repurposing existing or previously-created measures. This is because of the following considerations:

1. If Advanced Canvas alignments are added to an existing measure, ALL previous results will be removed.
2. A measure that is aligned with Canvas results can ONLY contain Canvas results. It is not possible to have a measure that has a different result method in one Plan and Advanced Canvas results in a different Plan.

Therefore, it is best to consider measures that are intended to house Advanced Canvas results as unique from measures in which other Results options will be utilized. 

Measures that are aligned to Advanced Canvas results are indicated in the centralized measures area. 

When a measure is created in the centralized measures area with the intention of using the Advanced Canvas integration, it can be aligned to activities from any corresponding term to that measure, based on course mapping. The results for those activities will automatically appear in the open assessment plan that corresponds to the year containing the terms where those activities took place.

Key points to keep in mind: 

• If the plan is closed, the measure will not appear.
• If there are no course sections that correspond to the reporting year of the assessment plan, then results won’t appear.
• If there are no activities that correspond to the assessment plan, results will be blank.
• If there are activities aligned and the scoring takes place that day, the results will appear after the overnight sync.

If Advanced Canvas alignments are added to an existing measure, ALL previous results will be removed. If there are results from Canvas, then the results from Canvas will appear. If there are no results from Canvas, results will be removed from the aligned measure. However, the result files and summaries will remain.

• If there is a past measure in a past plan and activities that correspond to that reporting year are tagged, the Advanced Canvas results will appear.
• If a measure is newly created in a past plan and non Advanced Canvas results are added, and then that measure is converted to being an Advanced Canvas measure, the results for the measure in that past plan will be removed. That measure will not appear in any subsequent Assessment plans where the reporting year end date has passed.
